The LOTE curriculum at The Knox School encompasses three languages:
- Chinese
- French
- German
The LOTE curriculum is designed to reflect student’s individual language backgrounds, interests, aspirations and abilities. At The Knox School students have the opportunity to use other languages to explore unfamiliar cultures and to expand their employment opportunities beyond school.
CHINESE
Chinese is one of the world’s major languages. The Knox School teaches modern standard Chinese. By studying Chinese, students gain a greater understanding not only of the Chinese language but also of the rich Chinese culture and tradition. Students may also enhance their future employment opportunities in areas such as diplomacy, interpretation, language teaching and business. Students are offered Chinese from Year 5 to Year 12.
FRENCH
The study of French develops students’ ability to understand and use a language which is widely taught and spoken around the world. The ability to converse in French provides students with a direct means of accessing a rich and varied culture. A knowledge of French can provide students with enhanced vocational opportunities in many fields such as banking and international finance, Commerce, diplomacy and translating. Students are offered French from Year 7 to Year 12.
GERMAN
German is the native language of millions inhabitants of Germany, Austria, Switzerland. Liechtenstein and Luxemburg. Germany and Austria have a rich cultural tradition especially in the field of music with the likes of Beethoven and Mozart. Linguistically, German learners have an advantage in that English is a Germanic language and 50 per cent of its vocabulary shares a common origin with German. Students are offered German from Prep to Year 12.
