The Mathematics Department at The Knox School strives to deliver quality teaching to all students, catering for individual differences. The Mathematics curriculum at The Knox School from Pre Prep to Year 10 embraces all the specified guidelines of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) and the Curriculum Standards Framework II (CSF II).
We introduce the TI Nspire (CAS) calculators to our curriculum at Years 7,8,9 and 10. This enables us to teach course topics in a more innovative manner. At these years we also have extension groups to give greater challenges to our bright mathematics students.
The main objective of the Mathematics program is to develop in students the ability to:
Know and use essential Mathematics notation and terminology
Represent a given situation in mathematical terms
Select and use mathematical techniques that are appropriate to a given problem
Express mathematical arguments in a clear, logical manner, both orally and in writing
Organise, interpret and present information/data accurately in written, symbolic, tabular, graphical and diagrammatic forms
Present and communicate information processed and analysed by appropriate mathematical tools. Interpret derived results in the correct context
Recognise patterns and structures in a variety of situations and draw inductive generalisations
Demonstrate knowledge of the applications of Mathematics to life in a technological society
