Early Learning Centre

The Early Learning Centre establishes vital foundations so that your child receives the best possible start to their education.

The Early Learning Centre caters for children from the ages of three to five years. There are two rooms – Pre-Prep 3, for children who have turned three and Pre-Prep 4, for four and five year old children.

Pre-Prep classes provide a stimulating environment for children within a program based on individual progression. Pre-Prep is an extension of home, a place where children feel loved, accepted and secure, as well as being a place where children are able to grow and develop their abilities. Parents are encouraged to attend different activities in the centre and their involvement on these days is greatly valued by all.

The Early Learning Centre prepares children thoroughly for the expectations and day-to-day routine of school. Children aged four and five attend school assemblies and share integrated play areas with older students during their final months in Pre-Prep to prepare them for the school years to come.

At the Early Learning Centre children are valued as individuals with regard to their emotional, social, physical and intellectual development, and learning programs are designed with this in mind. The program aims to assist in each child's physical, social, intellectual and emotional growth by offering:

a secure, caring, nurturing and well disciplined environment

support and encouragement for the development of
self-direction and self-discipline

a focus on caring for others and tolerance of all differences

specialist teachers and facilities designed to extend each child and highlight their particular talents

The Early Learning Centre offers children a spacious area in which to learn and play. Fully fenced playgrounds provide a safe and attractive area out of doors, whilst classroom areas are large and bright. Children wear a simple, practical uniform consisting of a Knox School tracksuit, skivvy and rugby top in winter and a Knox School polo shirt and shorts in summer.

Children can attend for a minimum of two days in Pre-Prep 3 and a minimum of three days in Pre-Prep 4 to a maximum of five full days, 8.40 am to 3.10 pm (2.55pm each Tuesday), with fees varying accordingly. Parents may choose their required days in order to accommodate all families’ varying needs.

Before and After School Care and Holiday Programs are available for students in the Early Learning Centre.

The weekly program will include activities from the following Learning Areas:

Literacy

Children, who are ready, learn to recognise words and letters through the Letterland Reading Program. Oral language and presentation skills are developed in 'show and tell' and drama sessions, whilst library lessons introduce students to book selection and the borrowing process.

Numeracy

With a focus on 'learning through play', children learn basic mathematical concepts through manipulating materials.  Number recognition is developed and students showing an interest in numbers will be encouraged to solve simple problems.

Art

A variety of skills are introduced and developed at the Early Learning level in art including drawing, modelling, painting, printing, and construction.  Children are encouraged to work on both individual pieces as well as collaboratively on group projects.

Technology

Children are encouraged to develop basic computer skills through use of educational programs related to early Literacy and Numeracy.  Computers are available in both classrooms.

Performing Arts

Based on the Kodaly teaching method, the specialist music classes focus on the five concepts of listening, singing, performance, movement, and creativity. Involvement in movement games encourages our children to explore different dance movements. Exposure to basic techniques, skills and processes assists in the development of presenting and performing skills. All Early Learning Centre children are involved in an annual musical production.

Perceptual Motor Program

Rotational activities are carefully designed to assist each child in acquiring efficient movement, promote improved sensory functioning and develop positive self-image.  Parents are encouraged to assist in this program.
