Transition

Transition to Prep

The Knox School considers the orientation process for its Prep students as a vital part of the process of transition from Kindergarten, Pre-School or the Early Learning Centre to School. All Prep students are able to visit the School on a number of occasions, either formally or informally, in order to become familiar with the surroundings, students and staff. Research shows that a well-structured orientation program is likely to ensure a smooth transition to school.

The Head of The Junior School interviews all prospective students and their parents, and a tour of the school is part of the process. Early in Term Four a Prep Parent Information Evening is held where the Prep program is discussed and information given in order to prepare the students and families for school. There are three more opportunities for Prep students to spend time with their possible class members and teachers, including a Mini-Olympics afternoon. Details of this transition program will be provided during Term Three of the year preceding entry to Prep.

Students may also attend the Pre-Prep 4 Centre during Term Four for occasional sessions to participate in the program and get to know their future class members. These sessions need to be coordinated with the Pre-Prep 4 teacher. For further details please contact the Junior School Office on +6 13 8805 3800.

From Junior School to Lower Middle School

As with the transition into Lower Middle School from local Primary Schools, the transition from Junior School to Lower Middle School is taken very seriously. It is important for both students and their parents that this process is treated with the utmost care and consideration.

In order to make the transition process as smooth as possible, The Knox School undertakes the following:

The Buddy Program

Each class from Year 5 to Year 7 work with a Junior School class to create a buddy system. It is anticipated that this will occur on a term by term basis. Activities are wide ranging and the older students are mentored in how to interact positively with their younger counterparts. These activities generally take place over a morning culminating in a barbecue lunch.

Orientation Day

Orientation Day is attended by The Knox School Year 4 students and all incoming Lower Middle School students from external schools. The Year 5 teachers arrange a series of activities that will be relevant to the students as they enter the Lower Middle School including getting to know the school grounds and participating in activities such as science experiments and sport.

Class selections

The Year 4 teachers will place students into two groups taking into account academic ability, sociability and friendship groupings. The Year 4 and Year 5 teachers will liaise with both Heads of School to monitor class selections throughout term 1.

Parent morning tea

During Term Three all Year 4 parents are personally invited to attend a morning tea at the School. The Principal, Head of Lower Middle School and all Year 5 and 6 teachers are available to answer questions and to give a tour of their respective classrooms.

Information evening

With many parents working full time we are aware that not all parents will have the opportunity to attend the morning tea. Therefore early in Term Four an Information Evening is organised for Year 4 parents. The Principal, Head of Lower Middle School and the Year 5 and 6 teachers are all available to answer any questions you may have.
