From the Head of Middle School

“The Middle School aims to provide programs that are ideally suited to the requirements of young adolescents. These programs, both academic and co-curricular, are aimed at enabling students to develop traits and skills that ensure they are well-equipped, well-rounded and well-prepared for future challenges.

Academic focus is important and students are urged to deliver their best at all times. To this end, study skills and tips, organisation and time management, and goal setting are explored to ensure that students are able to reach their full potential. A dedicated teaching staff is on hand at all times to provide the necessary support and guidance and to ensure that all learning expectations are met. Extension and support programs cater for the needs of individual students.

Co-curricular activities underpin the notion of developing students who are well-rounded and who can adapt to the environment in which they find themselves. The tutor program activities aim to foster a sense of responsibility and ownership for actions, with a resilient, persistent and determined approach to dealing with setbacks.

Team-building activities are essential when fostering a nurturing and caring atmosphere. The tutor program, structured in Houses and led by dedicated tutors, develops the School values of Respect, Resilience, Responsibility, Achievement, and Care and Empathy. By creating an awareness of others, students are nurtured to have a higher regard of the opportunities and prospects available to them, and to work together with shared values and a common goal.

The Middle School encourages students to achieve their best, show respect for others, be accepting of differences and develop a sound sense of honesty, integrity and thoughtfulness.”

Years 7, 8 and 9

Middle School at Knox is Years 7, 8 and 9. They have separate learning spaces with teachers who are specially trained to understand the needs of the growing adolescent. The Middle School allows students to enter the Senior School with confidence in the uniqueness of self, in their talents and with their relationships.

Adolescent Years

The adolescent years offer a challenging time for many young people and our dynamic Middle School has at its core, a curriculum focus on adolescent Health and Wellbeing. Our aim is to develop in our students, greater social and personal development, confidence, resilience and self-esteem.

Discovery

While a dedicated team of staff ensures that key learning areas are met, there are a number of self-discovery programs that your child will go on – all programs that are very important as they deal with the varied challenges of adolescence in the modern world.

Community Service

Active community service promotes a positive self-identity for young people. Citizenship programs are a way of reducing mental health issues associated with anxiety and depression. Year 7 explores the values of Care and Empathy related to community service; Year 8 engages in a program exploring the impact of community involvement; Year 9 completes 20 hours of community service during the year.
