First Impressions

A speech made at Middle School Assembly

"Good morning students, teachers, guests and parents. My name is Holly Rowland and I am new to the school. I was asked to tell you how my first couple of weeks have been at The Knox School. I am so excited about being in high school this year. Some new things I have experienced are:

Keeping a diary - I’m finding that I have to be very organised this year. Not only am I getting used to a new school, new teachers, new friends and new surroundings but now I have to cope with a timetable. There are so many different subjects each day with different teachers in different rooms.

Having your own big locker with a key is also new to me. I’m used to a pull out desk tub and a pigeon hole for my bag.

Homework. What can I say? From an hour and a half a fortnight to an hour and a half a night. It’s really hard work, but so far so good! I’m sure it will be worth it in the end.

Catching the school bus is a new experience for me too. It was a bit scary at first but now its good fun. I’ve met some really nice kids.

I’m really looking forward to all the sporting events and activity days. There are so many groups, clubs and activities to choose from and get involved in at the school.

The best thing so far is all of my new friends and teachers. Even the older kids are taking the time to talk tome and ask me how I’m going. It makes me feel really good and gives me a sense of belonging. I love coming to this school and I’m really proud to tell people which high school I go to. I know that I will really enjoy the next 6 years at The Knox School.

Year 5 students reflect on their first two weeks

"I like the freedom at lunchtime and snack time. I lost my best friend at the end of last year because she went to a new school but I have made a few new friends in Year 5. I love my teacher, he’s great. I really like the way he teaches. This year I am looking forward to performing in J-Rock, House Arts and House Swimming. Being in the Lower Middle School is awesome!"

"My first week in the Lower Middle School was so scary because I didn’t know anyone. I feel good now because I know lots of people. The best things about being here are the freedom, canteen, teachers and friends I’ve made. The classes and subjects are good, way way better than my old Primary School. We are so lucky to have a great school. I have come from a different school and this school is the best. I am looking forward to a good year. My goal for the year is to improve my handwriting. I have made new friends and this school has so many things to do. This school has nice people. THANK YOU"

"I didn’t feel nervous but I was glad to come to Year 5. I definitely like the freedom and buying lunch and being with older people than younger people. I feel great now I have made some new friends and I’ve kept all of my new friends from Junior School. I love dancing and singing so I am going to be in every dancing and singing event I can for the school. I am really excited now, I LOVE YEAR 5!!!!!"
