Student Services/Pastoral Care
For students in Year 10, 11 and 12, The Knox School’s Counsellors provide professional and confidential counselling on a wide range of matters. Our Counsellors are qualified psychologists with a great deal of experience working with young people and their families. Any student or parent may make an appointment to see one of the Counsellors or a student may be referred by a teacher. Typical topics students, parents and teachers raise relate to student friendships and family issues, learning and memory issues, behaviour problems and loneliness or homesickness.
As Psychologists, the Counsellors can also provide comprehensive educational assessments including IQ and ability testing.
Early in the academic Year 12 students are expected to take part in a study camp. This camp will provide intensive academic guidance and will address strategies for maximizing results in Year 12. The camp will be held at a location away from The Knox School campus.
Leadership is central to the development of character for all students at The Knox School. Our students are encouraged to speak publicly at assemblies, to accept responsibilities in a variety of co-curricular activities and to join programs which specifically target leadership skills.
The Senior College Prefects provide important leadership role models at The Knox School. They are selected by interview, with the approval of the Principal. House Captains and the Year Level Coordinators choose House Committees each year whilst Heads of Department choose Subject Captains. These students learn to organise, set deadlines and motivate others. Their roles are crucial to the culture of our school.
The development of skills in leadership is fundamental to the ethos of The Knox School. Young people who support each other in all aspects of school life are likely to live and work together with purpose. Our school leaders are encouraged to support and care for their peers. Every student at The Knox School should feel secure and comfortable to seek help and advice from a school leader.
The Head Start program begins at the conclusion of the Year 10 and Year 11 examinations to provide a platform to launch into VCE studies for the upcoming year. The program aims to outline the first work requirements and school assessed coursework, as well as provide homework over the January vacation. All academic work for this program must be completed and handed in for assessment at the commencement of the upcoming year.
Every Senior College student will be part of a Tutor Group that is under the care of a Tutor Teacher. The Tutor Teacher will be the first point of contact for students and will provide support and encouragement to extend student’s wellbeing at the Senior College. Tutor Group is also utilised for the distribution of daily school bulletins and the school newsletter.
