Welcome and Welcome Back

A special and warm welcome to all of those who are new to The Knox School community and whose children started at school today. Welcome back to all who are returning for the 2021 school year.

Yesterday, I spent some time walking around visiting classrooms and while I can't promise I visited every classroom, I certainly visited many to say hello and enjoyed talking with students in the grounds during the day. What impressed me yesterday was the gentle and warm welcome the new people received and the quiet buzz that existed in the school no more than half an hour after commencement.

From our very youngest to our ‘old hands’ in year 12, I know 2021 will be a positive and productive year. The adolescents in Middle School and the young people in the Senior School missed out on many opportunities for small and large group social interaction in 2020 and so we had a special programme in these first days to practise some of those group skills and team-building skills, to revisit and refine organisational, record-keeping, study and time management skills, in preparation for the year ahead. It was great to talk with Year 12 students and their parents at the Year 12 Information Evening last night.

Yesterday morning, I was privileged to take part with all of Year 7 in ‘ice breaker bingo’. It was really good fun and I got to learn a few names and faces. Believe it or not, I am familiar with a year seven student who tells me they love spinach and while I could not find someone who had a haircut last week, it wasn't hard to find someone who has blue pyjamas and who has a cat for a pet. Did you know, Mrs Cook's favourite meal is breakfast and the Head of Chisholm House, Mr Brand is one of three boys in his family?

The Chair of the Board of The Knox School, Ms Wendy Lewis was awarded an OAM on Australia day for ‘service to the not-for-profit sector and to education’. On behalf of all of those in the school community, I offer Wendy our heartiest congratulations on this wonderful honour bestowed upon her for the volunteer work she has done over many years.

I am sure 2021 will bring its challenges but let's hope they are nothing like what we managed in 2020 and whatever those challenges are, if we handle them as well as we did those in 2020, we will again thrive and grow as a community.

I wish your children the very best for 2021 at school and to all of you, I look forward to working with you in the months to come.

Principal and Chief Executive

Year 7 - 12 Sport

The Sport Department, coaches and students are very excited about the return to Sport in 2021. Please find attached the Sport details for next week which will also be emailed to all students in Years 7 - 12 and Mentor teachers.

In summary

Monday 1 February - Year 7 students will participate in a variety of athletic disciplines, followed by trials for their chosen Term 4 Sport.

Wednesday 3 February - Senior students will participate in Term 1 trials in preparation for the weekly EISM competition which commences the following week on Wednesday 10th February.

Thursday 4 February - Year 8 and 9 students will participate in a variety of athletic disciplines, followed by trials for their chosen Term 4 Sport.

Unfortunately, due to the large number of students trying out for some teams, not all students will be successful in being selected for their chosen sport. Therefore, where possible, a number of training sessions are conducted by our Sport coaches who run a variety of training drills and simulated match practise sessions to determine the final team. Students in Years 8 and 9 will have ample opportunity to demonstrate their ability, however, the only training session for Senior students will be Wednesday 3 February as matches commence the following week. Usually, senior students would have had the opportunity for a training session last year, but due to Covid and our inability to mix year levels, this was unfortunately unable to occur. Students who are unsuccessful in making their chosen sport are given the opportunity to trial for their second preference.

Please note that our House Swimming Carnival will be conducted on Monday 22 February. Students will have the opportunity to register for events in upcoming Mentor Group sessions. In preparation for the House Swimming Carnival and the EISM Swimming Carnival, students are given the opportunity to train at King Swim, located on Mountain Highway, commencing on Monday 8 February. Students who are interested in this opportunity should contact Mr Wilson and information will be sent to parents via Operoo.

Relay For Life

The Knox School will again have a team at the Knox Relay for Life, to be held on Saturday 13 March at Knox Athletics Track.

The event has been shortened this year and will not be an overnight event, instead running from 12.00pm to 10.00pm on the Saturday.

We would love you to be part of our team at this fantastic community event, which raises much needed funds for the Cancer Council. The idea of the relay is to have at least one member of the team on the track at all times during the event. Relay for Life is a fantastic and fun community event – stay through the event, or just come for an hour or so. If you would like to join the TKS team, please register at the link below. If you are unable to join the team, you can still contribute to our fundraising efforts, by donating to the TKS team through the link. If you have any questions, please email Nicola Thomas in the Junior School
