“The Junior School is a wonderful place for little people. It is a warm, supportive environment where every child is encouraged to feel welcome, valued and safe. We cater for children in the first stage of their formal education offering an Early Learning program for three and four year old children and two classes at each level from Prep to Year 6.

The Early Learning program is undertaken in our Early Learning Centre (ELC) and introduces our youngest children to the school setting in a program that draws on play and children’s natural inquisitiveness.

The ELC program enables children to make the transition to Prep more smoothly and with greater confidence. From Prep to Year 6, the children are introduced to a greater range of opportunities and experiences.

The Specialist Program allows our Specialist teachers to work closely with classroom teachers to develop a curriculum that links concepts and skills across a range of topics. Literacy and numeracy skills are a primary focus of the Prep to Year 6 program and integrated units are underpinned by Science, Health, Technology and SOSE (Studies of Society and Environment).

Special Days provide a focus for a different approach to learning such as our Oktoberfest where children participate in activities that consolidate class sessions and generate an interest in another culture.

The home-school connection is important at the Junior School and we welcome family members to the school on Special Persons’ day, to assist with school productions, assemblies and as classroom helpers during the term.

The Junior School is equipped with large, well-appointed classrooms that open onto a bright atrium and garden area, creating a physical environment conducive to learning. ELC to Year 4 classes are located within one building with Years 5 and 6 in an adjacent Learning Centre. Specialist classes are taken by highly qualified teachers in classrooms designed to support the curriculum. “

The Junior Enrichment Program

The Knox School’s enrichment program has been developed for gifted and talented students from Prep to Year 6 and is designed to enrich and supplement the individualised learning already in place in our Junior and Middle School curriculum.

We recognise that Gifted Students’ abilities differ from their peers to such a degree that differentiated curricula and instructional techniques are needed to nurture growth and development.

The enrichment program exposes students to high level thinking skills and activities designed to supplement the regular curriculum to tap divergent, analytical, creative, and evaluative thinking.

Students will engage in differentiated open-ended learning activities that address their unique talents, challenge their thinking, cater for a huge range of different learning styles and techniques, and solve complex problems.

Students are always encouraged to take advantage of opportunities to explore creative problem solving as well as other more advanced concepts. They have the chance to enter competitions in mathematics, writing and poetry under the supervision of hand-picked staff who specialise in advancement education. Students are assessed regularly to monitor their progress.

Small groups and specialised staff ensure students selected in the program have an opportunity to explore and develop their potential beyond the traditional curriculum.

Students are carefully selected for the program through thorough testing and discussion and recommendation from teaching staff and the Heads of Schools.

The enrichment program is at no additional cost to parents.
