The Music School at Knox

“The myriad of music ensembles, concerts, and events on offer to all TKS students allows them to experience amazing opportunities both within the classroom and co-curricular programs.

Through the Year 2 and 3 String Program and the Year 5, 6 and 7Band and String Extension (BASE) Program, all students have the amazing opportunity to learn an instrument and play in ensembles as part of their classroom music curriculum.

Students of all year levels have the opportunity to learn an instrument as part of the School instrumental lesson program. These instruments include: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn, Euphonium, Trombone, Tuba, Percussion (including drum kit), Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Piano, Voice and Speech & Drama. All instrumental students perform as part of the recital program and can also perform at assemblies when invited to do so. All students who learn an instrument at the school also participate in a school ensemble when they reach the appropriate level.

The Knox School offers a diverse ensemble program for students of all ages and instruments.”

The Band program includes the Senior Concert Band, Intermediate Concert Band and the Junior Band. For those interested in Jazz we also have the TKS Big Band and the newly formed Stage Band. Many small ensembles are also formed from these larger bands such as the Percussion Ensemble, numerous Guitar Ensembles and Rock Bands. The Chamber Strings is our most senior string ensemble, which then forms the core for our Chamber Orchestra which runs on a project basis rather than throughout the whole year. The Intermediate Strings and Falcon Strings are wonderful ensemble for those intermediate and junior string players to gain some confidence while learning the finer points of ensemble playing.

The choral program at The Knox School begins with the Piccolo Voices for students in Years 1, 2 and 3, and Murana Voices for those students in year 3, 5 and 6. Students then join the Senior Choir in Year 7.

All ensembles offer wonderful performance opportunities for the students involved from representing the School at community events and services through to travelling interstate and overseas for competitions and public performances.”

The curricular and co-curricular music offerings at The Knox School are interlinked. This means that, in the myriad of Music Ensembles, activities and events available, participating students may use this involvement to contribute to their music coursework, and of course they may also participate just for the love of music. At The Knox School, we encourage students to perform a range of music styles across a number of ensembles, but we also strongly encourage a culture of creativity through composition, arranging and student conducting of music ensembles.

The Knox School offers a diverse Choral Program, including the Piccolo and Murana Voices for Junior School students and the Senior Choir.

Our Instrumental Ensemble and Band Program are similarly extensive, offering opportunities for students in the Training Concert Band, the Senior Concert Band, The Chamber Orchestra and the highly acclaimed TKS Big Band. We also have a healthy Strings and Wind Program, represented by the wonderful Falcon Strings and the Flute Choir. We also offer a popular Guitar Ensemble, a jazz ensemble, an energetic Percussion Group and an improvisation class.

Students involved in the co-curricular Music Program often perform at School assemblies and music concerts throughout the year. They regularly represent the School at official functions within the Knox community and compete in local, national and international music competitions. A growing touring program enables students to expand their view of the world through music and each year an intensive music camp is held to hone the skills of our developing instrumentalists. The world of music is yours at The Knox School – the only limit is your imagination!
