Students Take Part in Powerful ‘Being Brave’ Theatre Experience

On the final day of the Term 2, our Junior School students participated in Being Brave, a transformative live theatre performance designed to foster resilience and emotional wellbeing facilitated by Brainstorm Productions. This immersive experience, blending storytelling, music and dance, encouraged students to explore what it means to be truly brave – showing vulnerability, seeking help when needed and offering support to others during tough times.

The production featured relatable characters facing real-life challenges, such as family separation, adjusting to life in a new country, coping with loss, and navigating the complexities of online safety. Each story was crafted to resonate deeply with students, highlighting the importance of emotional expression and social connection.

Our Deputy Head of Junior School, Sarah McKenzie, shared this at the end of the experience:

Addressing key aspects of emotional health in a creative and relatable way, this initiative not only brought joy and engagement to our students and staff, but also provided lasting tools for students to navigate their own challenges, both at school and beyond.

The central theme of Being Brave was designed to reinforce key aspects of our school’s wellbeing program. By promoting open discussions about difficult topics, the performance created an environment where students felt empowered to ask for help and lean on each other for support. After the performance, students had the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session, allowing them to reflect on what they had experienced and to ask any questions that arose.

The play was developed in consultation with educators and psychologists, ensuring that it was not only entertaining but also a valuable educational tool. It was specifically tailored to complement our existing curriculum, offering resources to further support classroom discussions on resilience, mental health and emotional wellbeing.

The Being Brave experience marked a meaningful and impactful conclusion to the term, fostering compassion, courage and a sense of connection among our students.
