Careers Expo Inspires Students and Parents

Despite the rain, our dedicated parents and students turned out in impressive numbers for our Careers Expo and Subject Selection Evening on Wednesday 23 July 2025. The event, held on campus, was a key opportunity for families of current Years 9 to 12 students to talk to TKS teachers about subjects on offer, explore career pathways, speak with industry professionals and make informed choices about future studies.

This annual event is one of the highlights of our academic calendar and this year was no exception. Over 30 tertiary institutions and organisations were represented, offering a diverse range of opportunities and expert advice to support students in planning their post-school futures.

Parents and students alike appreciated the chance to speak one-on-one with representatives, asking questions about courses, career pathways, VCE subject requirements and application processes. Whether students were considering university, TAFE, apprenticeships or alternative study pathways, there was guidance available to help inform their next steps.

Institutions in attendance included leading universities such as University of Melbourne, Monash University, Deakin University, RMIT University and La Trobe University, among many others. Specialist colleges and training providers, such as JMC Academy, Photographic Studies College, The Hotel School Melbourne and the Whitehouse Institute of Design, showcased the broad range of post-secondary options available to our students.

There was also strong representation from vocational education and training institutions including Holmesglen, Box Hill Institute, Melbourne Polytechnic and Kangan Institute. Students interested in trades, design or industry-specific training had ample opportunity to engage with experts in these fields. Additionally, organisations such as Defence Force Recruiting, Engineers Australia and Chartered Accountants ANZ provided insight into professional pathways and careers in service, STEM and business sectors.

For those considering study abroad or a cultural exchange, the World Education Program (WEP) offered valuable information on international opportunities that broaden both education and life experience.

A unique aspect of the evening was the clear link between subject selection and future career planning. Families were encouraged to consider how VCE subjects align with tertiary entry requirements and long-term goals. These conversations, facilitated by both school staff and exhibitors, helped to demystify the process and empower students to make well-informed decisions.

Our Career Development Practitioner, Jacky Burton, thanked families for their active involvement:

We extend our sincere thanks to all families who attended, particularly those who made the effort despite the wet weather. Your commitment to your child’s education and future is deeply appreciated. We also thank all our exhibitors and staff who made the evening such a success.

The Careers Expo is a reminder that planning for the future doesn’t happen in isolation – it’s a collaborative journey between students, families, schools and the wider education and professional community. We look forward to continuing to support our students as they explore their interests and carve out exciting pathways toward their futures.
