Year 6 Students Reimagine Connection to Country

This year, our Year 6 students are digging deep, literally and figuratively, as part of their 2025 Knoxpedition. The Indigenous Garden Project is more than just a hands-on learning experience. It’s a student-led journey of reflection, collaboration and connection with Country.

At TKS, we challenge the traditional script of education. We believe that meaningful learning must connect with the world around us—and that’s exactly what this year’s Knoxpedition sets out to do.

The theme for 2025 is retrospect. Students will begin by stepping back and observing. They’ll assess the current Indigenous Garden, noting which plants are thriving, which elements need care, and how the space can better reflect its purpose. From there, they’ll use the Design Thinking Model to reimagine a place of learning, culture and community.

Throughout the project, students will engage deeply with:

  • Indigenous plants and the cultural knowledge of the Wurundjeri and Bunurong people, Traditional Custodians of the land on which our School stands
  • Core curriculum areas such as Science, Mathematics, Geography and STEM to analyse, plan and redesign the garden
  • Sustainability, environmental care and practical gardening skills
  • Their own personal growth, particularly as they prepare to transition from Year 6 to Year 7

To deepen their understanding, students will visit the Royal Botanic Gardens in Cranbourne for the “Shared Country” guided tour. This immersive experience offers a powerful insight into Indigenous perspectives and traditional land care.

In the classroom, the journey continues through literacy. Students will read Cooee Mittigar by Jasmine Seymour and Leanne Mulgo Watson, a beautifully written and illustrated text that explores the seasons of Darug Country and the deep connection between language, art and land.

The ultimate goal? To co-design and help construct a refreshed Indigenous Garden that stands opposite the Year 7 Centre, a space that invites reflection, fosters learning and celebrates the richness of culture and Country.

This project speaks to the heart of what we believe at The Knox School: that learning should be bold, purposeful and community minded. We can’t wait to see how our Year 6 students transform the space over the coming weeks.

Stay tuned as we share their progress throughout the rest of the year.
