Curiosity, Creativity and Cosmic Codes
What a spectacular celebration National Science Week was this year under the captivating theme “Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language”! The week was bursting with curiosity, creativity, and discovery, uniting students across Years 7 to 12 in a journey through science, teamwork, and imagination.
At the heart of the week were our Academic Prefects, Linda and Alex, who designed a vibrant program of lunchtime activities. The excitement was infectious as students gathered for several demonstrations throughout the week, the highlights being;
- Experiments led by Ms Ashok
- Experimenting with magnetic forces
- Using fire to excite electrons
These live demonstrations captured the theme perfectly, showing how the smallest mysteries of the universe can ignite the biggest questions.
Mentor Activities: Each year level took part in a dedicated science activity during Mentor time, with challenges crafted to bring abstract concepts to life in hands-on, unforgettable ways.
Year 7: Paper Plane Engineering
Inside the gym, Year 7 students became aerospace engineers in a paper airplane showdown for House points. With designs ranging from sleek darts to elaborate gliders, students debated aerodynamics, thrust, lift, and drag – all while cheering on the flight paths of their creations.
Year 8: The Great Egg Drop
Year 8 students tackled gravity with an exhilarating egg-drop challenge. Teams engineered creative carriers to protect their eggs, combining design with problem-solving. Cheers erupted as three designs landed intact, and the teamwork on display was every bit as impressive as the science on display.
Year 9: Buckyball Building
In a deliciously tactile experiment, Year 9 students constructed buckyballs out of marshmallows and toothpicks, guided by SLPT representatives Grace H and Methuki D. They discovered that these molecules were among the first nanoparticles ever identified – all while laughing and sneaking a marshmallow or two.
Year 10: The Fibonacci Amazing Race
Led by students Mali and Fred and supported by our Year 12 Prefects, Year 10s took on a fast-paced Amazing Race inspired by the Fibonacci sequence. Teams solved puzzles, cracked codes, and raced across the School grounds, literally following the spiral of nature’s most famous sequence in an exhilarating test of strategy and collaboration.
Years 11 & 12: Codebreakers
Our senior students embraced the challenge of scientific detective work. Through binary and Morse code, they pieced together a hidden story to reveal Albert Einstein as the 1921 Nobel Prize winner in Physics. The activity demanded sharp logic, teamwork, and creativity, mirroring the way real scientists decode the mysteries of the universe.

National Science Week is more than different experiments and activities: at TKS we show how science is found around us. Activities throughout the the week help foster and inspire our students’ curious minds, question logic, and learn. From aerodynamics to nanotechnology, and from mathematical patterns to scientific history, students experienced firsthand that science is not only taught but lived.
We look forward to celebrating again in 2026 with the same passion, creativity, and energy that made this year such a success.
