National Careers Week was launched with great enthusiasm at The Knox School this week, beginning with a parent webinar presented by Alana Kilmartin from Unserious Careers on Monday 11 May, followed by an engaging face-to-face presentation for all Year 11 and 12 students on Friday 15 May.
Alana brought a refreshing and practical perspective to career development, focusing particularly on the first five years after Year 12 and the many different pathways young people may take as they transition into adulthood. During the parent webinar, she explored the concept of a “Career Support Team” – the network of people who help guide and support students in their career planning journey. This team may include parents and guardians, Careers Practitioners, teachers, family friends, employers and mentors. Alana emphasised the importance of beginning career conversations early and helping young people gradually build the knowledge, confidence and experiences needed to thrive beyond school.
The student presentation was highly interactive and prompted students to think broadly and positively about their futures. Topics included the “casual jog years” after school, GAP years, developing career readiness, and the importance of remaining open to opportunities and change. Students were encouraged to recognise that career journeys are rarely linear, and that growth often comes through exploration, curiosity and experience.
As part of National Careers Week, we were delighted to host our inaugural Alumni Careers & Connections Evening on Wednesday 13 May. The informal networking event provided our Falconian alumni with the opportunity to reconnect with the school, meet former students from across a wide range of year levels and industries, and hear firsthand stories, experiences and career insights. The relaxed evening of conversation and shared experiences also enabled attendees to build valuable professional and personal connections, sparking meaningful networking opportunities and strengthening ties within the TKS alumni community.
To close National Careers Week, TKS Career Development Practitioner & VCE/VET Coordinator, Jacky Burton, would like to remind students and families of the ongoing support available throughout the year:
Senior School students are encouraged to access careers guidance for assistance with pathway planning, subject selection, university and TAFE applications, apprenticeships and traineeships, resume preparation, interview skills and career exploration. We encourage all students to take advantage of these opportunities as they begin planning for life beyond The Knox School.
