On Wednesday 10 June, our Year 3 Students proudly stepped into the role of young geologists as they shared their learning about Geology during a special Parent Showcase. The event highlighted their growing understanding of rocks, minerals, and mining in Australia, and gave students the opportunity to present their work with confidence and pride.

Throughout the unit, students explored how minerals are formed and discovered fascinating facts about Australia’s rich mining industry. To bring their learning to life, they created their own crystals using sugar and water, carefully observing how crystals form over time. These hands-on experiments helped them connect scientific concepts with real-world processes in an engaging and memorable way.

Students also showcased their knowledge through thoughtfully designed research posters and creative PowerPoint presentations. Each display reflected their curiosity and effort, as they explained different minerals, their properties, and where they can be found.

A definite highlight of the showcase was the exciting hands-on mining activity, where students “mined” precious ore (chocolate chips!) from cookies. This fun and delicious experience helped them understand how mining works, from extraction to collection, while also sparking important discussions about the environmental impacts of resource extraction and the importance of responsible mining practices.

The Parent Showcase was a fantastic celebration of learning, creativity, and enthusiasm. Our Year 3 students should be incredibly proud of the way they shared their geological discoveries with their families.

What an inspiring way to dig deeper into science!
