The future doesn’t arrive fully formed. It is designed, tested, refined and rebuilt. That’s exactly what our Year 8 Robotics students are discovering as they begin their VEX V5 journey.

Working with metal components, motors, sensors and programmable controllers, students are building robots from the ground up, transforming ideas into working prototypes through hands-on exploration. Along the way, they are developing far more than technical skills. They are learning how to think creatively, tackle complex challenges, collaborate effectively and persevere when solutions don’t come easily.

Each team has embraced the opportunity to forge its own identity, with names such as TMCM Robotics, Braincells, Bamboo Bytes, BroCode.py, Lebrotics and Unexpected Error reflecting the humour, creativity and personality that students bring to every lesson.

The robotics lab has quickly become a hub of experimentation and innovation. Students work together to solve design challenges, compete in friendly in-class competitions and continually refine their creations through testing and redesign. They are learning an important lesson shared by the world’s most successful engineers and entrepreneurs: progress rarely comes from getting it right the first time. It comes from iteration, resilience and a willingness to keep improving.

This semester, the challenge expands as students step into the world of coding. Using both block-based and text-based programming, they will bring their robots to life through increasingly sophisticated behaviours and decision-making capabilities, building the foundations for future pathways in engineering, technology and innovation.

Walk into a robotics lesson and you’ll see more than robots in motion. You’ll see students thinking critically, collaborating with confidence and embracing the possibilities of what they can create. In a world increasingly shaped by technology, our students aren’t just preparing for the future. They’re learning how to build it.
