What started as a basketball game quickly became something much bigger.
This week, students packed the gym for the inaugural Farewell Tour, a student-led event designed to celebrate the Year 12 cohort while formally passing the torch to the Year 11s. Created and delivered by student leaders, the event transformed a familiar school setting into an atmosphere more reminiscent of a professional sporting arena, complete with player introductions, lighting effects, live commentary, halftime entertainment and a dramatic overtime finish.
The Farewell Tour showcased the creativity, initiative and leadership of our Senior School students, who worked behind the scenes to bring their vision to life and create a memorable experience for the whole school community.
School Captains Jackson C and Danu L reflect on the inaugural Farewell Tour below, sharing the story of an event that may well become a lasting part of life at The Knox School.
The Farewell Tour
On Tuesday 15th September, The Knox School hosted its inaugural end-of-term celebratory basketball game, The Farewell Tour. The event brought together Year 12 and Year 11 students for a competitive match designed to mark the final day of term for the graduating year group in style.
The Farewell Tour was created with a clear purpose: to give us Year 12s a memorable final celebration while formally passing the torch to Year 11. Rather than a typical school sporting fixture, this event was designed as a ceremonial occasion, one that would be talked about long after the final buzzer. It provided Year 12 students with a fitting send-off that acknowledged their time at the School while setting up a tradition for the year level that follows.
What set The Farewell Tour apart was its professional presentation. Drawing inspiration from major American sporting events, the organisers elevated the experience with several key elements. As each athlete was announced, they made their entrance through lighting effects, transforming the School gym into a professional arena. The lighting in the gym created an immersive atmosphere that shifted the mood from casual to occasion, making the event feel genuinely special. Danica M and Lucy R (Year 12) made the introductions feel lively with their incredible commentary’s.
Following the introductions, it was time for the pre-game team huddles. Year 12 team captain Emilio “The Target” H delivered an incredible hype up speech to fire up the Year 12 team and get us ready for battle.
From the opening tip, the energy was electric, with the crowd bringing an incredible atmosphere to the gym. Throughout the first half, however, the Year 11s put together a dominant performance against their older rivals, taking a comfortable 12-point lead into the half-time break.
At half time, Riley C (Year 9) kept the energy of the event alive with a fantastic performance of “Party Time” by Joe Jonas. Following Riley, the TKS Drumline took to the floor and put on an impressive performance of their own, keeping the crowd entertained as both teams prepared for the second half.
Coming out of the break, the nerves began to creep in for the Year 12s. But rather than letting the pressure get to us, we fought our way back into the contest. By the end of the third quarter, we had cut the deficit to just four points, setting up a thrilling final quarter.
This is where pure experience takes over.
With just 10 seconds left on the clock, Jackson “Captain Jack” C drove to the basket, scored through contact and was sent to the free throw line with the chance to bring the Year 12s within one. With the energy in the gym at its absolute peak, Jackson calmly knocked down the free throw, sending the game into overtime and a Golden Bucket finish.
The Year 12s won the overtime tip off and, despite the pressure, calmly moved the ball around the court as the Year 11 defence tightened up. With the entire gym holding its breath, Jehan “J-Money” M drove towards the basket and put up the layup.
The ball rolled around the rim before finally dropping through the net.
The gym erupted.
The Year 12 team immediately surrounded “J-Money”, celebrating the moment that had secured the Golden Bucket victory. After fighting back from a 12 point deficit, the Year 12s had completed the comeback when it when it mattered most, proving which team had what it took to come out on top.
The awards were then presented, with Nico W receiving MVP for the Year 11s and Jehan M taking home the MVP basketball award for the Year 12s.

So that was it. The Farewell Tour had its ending. And what an ending it was.
