What do goats, waterways, worm farms and wildlife habitats have in common?

For Year 4 students, they all formed part of a day of discovery at Edendale Community Environment Farm, where big ideas came to life. Through hands-on experiences, students explored how people, wildlife, waterways and communities are all connected, and how even small choices can create meaningful impact.

Throughout the day, students took part in a series of interactive workshops that challenged them to think differently about their relationship with the environment.

During the Habitat Heroes workshop, students investigated native plants, wildlife and animal habitats, while learning how Edendale supports local ecosystems through tree planting and community projects such as habitat boxes for possums and bats. The session encouraged students to consider the connections between people, animals and the environments we share.

The learning continued with a Sustainable Farm Tour, where students enjoyed feeding goats and sheep, explored a working worm farm and discovered how sustainable practices can help reduce waste and support healthier ecosystems.

In the Tale of a Creek workshop, students followed the journey of water from Diamond Creek to the river, exploring how pollution and human activity can affect waterways. They discussed practical actions that can make a positive difference, from reducing litter and reusing materials to safely disposing of everyday items that can pose a risk to wildlife.

Rather than simply learning about sustainability, students experienced it firsthand. The excursion encouraged curiosity, critical thinking and a deeper understanding of the role each of us can play in caring for the world around us.

By the end of the day, students returned with muddy shoes, curious minds and a greater appreciation for how interconnected our environment really is. Most importantly, they discovered that meaningful change often begins with small, thoughtful actions close to home.
