More than 200 name suggestions. One lucky draw. One new puppy with a very important future ahead of her.
This week, our Head of Junior School, Mr Simon Cowell, revealed the name of our newest four-legged community member at Junior School Assembly…
Murphy.
While Murphy may already be winning hearts across campus, she’s not quite ready to step into her future role as our Junior School wellbeing dog.
At just 11 weeks old, Murphy is still learning about the world around her. From walking calmly on a lead to navigating new environments and responding to commands, every day is a learning experience. Like all students at The Knox School, she is growing her confidence, developing new skills and discovering what she is capable of.
And that’s where our community comes in.
Every interaction Murphy has today helps shape the wellbeing dog she will become tomorrow. To support her training, we are asking students, families and staff to follow three important rules whenever they see Murphy around the School.
First, we say hello to the person, not the dog. While it’s tempting to greet a playful puppy, Murphy needs to learn that her focus should remain on the adult she is with.
Second, we give Murphy plenty of space when we pass by. This helps her stay calm and allows her to build confidence without feeling overwhelmed by lots of people around her.
And third, we keep moving. Rather than stopping to watch or stare, we simply carry on our way. This teaches Murphy that people coming and going is a normal part of life at school.
These simple actions may seem small, but they play an important role in Murphy’s development. Great wellbeing dogs aren’t born ready for the job. They are patiently trained, supported and nurtured by the communities around them.
For now, Murphy’s most important job is simply being a puppy. There will be plenty of time for learning, growing and the occasional zoomie as she begins her journey.
We’ll continue to share updates as Murphy settles into life at TKS and develops the skills needed for her future role.
Welcome to The Knox School, Murphy. We can’t wait to watch you grow.
