Curiosity took centre stage as Year 7 students attended the annual Year 7 Philosophy Day at Tintern Grammar last Wednesday 14 October.
Designed for curious, creative thinkers, the workshop challenged students to explore big ideas, wrestle with ethical dilemmas and engage with some of philosophy’s most thought-provoking questions. Through discussion, debate and collaborative problem-solving, students were encouraged to consider different perspectives, question assumptions and think deeply about the world around them.
Working in teams, students tackled complex scenarios, tested their reasoning, built arguments and discovered that being willing to reconsider an idea can be just as valuable as defending a position.
In a world that rarely presents simple answers, students were encouraged to embrace complexity, test their thinking and remain curious when faced with unfamiliar ideas. Along the way, they practised articulating their ideas, challenging assumptions and engaging thoughtfully with different perspectives.
Students explored key areas of philosophical thought while engaging with questions that have no easy answers. In doing so, they learned to articulate their thinking, challenge ideas respectfully and collaborate with others to navigate complex issues.
For students who enjoy grappling with ethical questions and debating different viewpoints, Philosophy Day also provides a strong foundation for future enrichment opportunities such as the Ethics Olympiad, where critical thinking and ethical reasoning are applied to real-world scenarios.
At The Knox School, we believe some of the most powerful learning begins not with finding the answer, but with having the confidence to ask a bigger question.
