What do you get when you combine creativity, craftsmanship and a touch of Wonderland? For our Year 7 Visual Communication Design (VCD) and Art students, the result is a captivating collection of clay top hat sculptures inspired by the curious and imaginative world of the Mad Hatter.
Under the guidance of Mr Chris Hilton, students embarked on a creative journey that challenged them to think beyond the ordinary and transform a simple top hat into something entirely unique. Drawing inspiration from the fantastical characters, playful details and whimsical spirit of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, students embraced the opportunity to let their imaginations run free.
Using slab construction and joining techniques, students carefully designed, built and decorated their sculptures from clay. Along the way, they explored key art elements including colour, shape and texture, while developing valuable practical skills and gaining confidence in their creative decision-making.
No two hats are alike. From bold colour palettes and intricate patterns to imaginative decorative features, each sculpture reflects the personality, creativity and individual artistic style of its creator. The project encouraged students to experiment, problem-solve and take creative risks, demonstrating that successful design often begins with curiosity and a willingness to explore new ideas.
At TKS, we believe creativity is more than producing beautiful work. It is about developing the confidence to think differently, communicate ideas and approach challenges from new perspectives. Projects such as these provide students with opportunities to nurture these essential skills while discovering the joy of artistic expression.
The Mad Hatter sculptures are just one example of the innovative and inspiring work being created across our Technology, Art and Design programs. Our community will have the opportunity to experience these imaginative creations firsthand at the upcoming Senior School TAD Show to be held on Thursday 8 October 2026.
Showcasing student work from Years 7 to 12 across Art, Visual Communication Design, Robotics, Media, Textiles and Food Studies, the exhibition celebrates the creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving and passion that define learning in the department. Families, friends and members of the community are warmly invited to explore the exhibition and see firsthand how TKS students bring their ideas to life through design, innovation and creative thinking.
