On Thursday 6 February 2025, more than 300 TKS parents and students attended our VCE Information Evening, providing vital insights into navigating the challenges and opportunities that the upcoming VCE year presents.

During the evening we heard from key staff including our Associate Principal: Head of Senior School, Janelle Mathias and our Head of VCE & Senior Students, Tracey Blunden. Their messages were clear; as the pointy end of school approaches, VCE can feel like a daunting journey but with the right mindset and strategy, students can set themselves up for success!

We also heard from our experienced (and often entertaining) Careers Development Practitioner, Jacky Burton, who shared some detailed insights into how past TKS students have navigated this year.

During the event, our Associate Principal: Head of Learning, Teaching and Innovation Liana Gooch also highlighted the importance of planning, support and self-care as students embark on this crucial phase of their education.

Here are the top 9 questions students should ask themselves as they approach VCE this year:

  1. How will I start the way I mean to continue?
The beginning of the year sets the tone for the months ahead. It’s essential to start strong and build habits that will carry you through. Set yourself up for success by getting organised, creating a designated study space free from distractions, and making a study timetable to ensure you’re staying on track from the start.
  1. What is my phone and social media downtime plan?
In today’s digital world, phones and social media can be major distractions. Consider negotiating with your parents a plan to manage your screen time. A simple yet effective approach is to keep your phone and laptop out of your room overnight to ensure better focus during study sessions and a more restful sleep.
  1. Who can I connect with for study?
You don’t have to do it alone! Studying in isolation can be difficult, so consider forming small study groups with peers in your subject areas. These groups can help keep you motivated, hold each other accountable, and provide different perspectives on challenging topics.
  1. How will I maintain balance?
VCE is demanding, but it’s essential to maintain a healthy balance between your academic and personal life. Make time for physical activity, socializing with friends, and other hobbies that promote your well-being. Plan these activities just as you would your study sessions, ensuring you don’t burn out along the way.
  1. Where do I want to be this time next year?
Having a clear vision of your goals will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the year. Whether it’s achieving certain academic results, gaining entry to a particular university course, or excelling in your chosen subject area, having a roadmap to your goals will help you prioritize your time and efforts effectively.
  1. Have I connected with the Careers Department?
The Careers Department is a valuable resource that can guide you in making informed decisions about your future. Ms. Burton and her team are always available to answer your questions and support you as you navigate this important time. It’s never too early to seek advice on career options, university pathways, or job opportunities.
  1. Have I asked for and acted upon clarification and feedback?
One of the most effective ways to improve academically is by acting on feedback. Don’t hesitate to ask your teachers for clarification on any concepts or assignments you’re unsure about. They are here to help you, and receiving feedback regularly will enable you to fine-tune your approach and improve your results.
  1. Do I understand the assessment criteria?
Understanding what is expected from you in each subject is crucial for achieving your desired results. Take the time to review past Examination Reports and assessment rubrics to get a clear sense of what high-achieving students have done and how to approach your own assessments.
  1. Do I need help?
Never be afraid to speak up if you’re struggling. Whether it’s academic challenges, stress, or time management, there are teachers, mentors, and support systems at school and at home who want to see you thrive. We’re here to help you succeed—not just to survive VCE, but to excel!

As students and parents reflect on these key questions, it’s clear that a successful VCE year is about more than just studying hard – it’s about being organised, seeking support and maintaining a healthy balance. With the right strategies in place, students can face the year ahead with confidence, ready to tackle the challenges of VCE and achieve their goals. Here’s to a successful and fulfilling year ahead!
