As students return for Semester 2, it is worth reflecting on one of the most meaningful learning experiences to conclude Semester One. Throughout the semester, our Year 9 students immersed themselves in Behind Those Eyes, a CUBE elective that challenged them to slow down, listen deeply and discover the extraordinary stories held within the everyday lives of others.
What began with a mixture of excitement and nerves during those first visits to Arcare grew into something far more significant. Through regular conversations, students formed genuine relationships with residents, gathering stories and memories that enabled them to create a professional written biography, a striking photographic portrait and a personalised visual chronology celebrating each resident’s life.
Throughout the semester, students became deeply invested in honouring the experiences and character of the person they had come to know. Conversations that began with questions about childhood or careers soon unfolded into stories of resilience, family, adventure, sacrifice and hope. As trust developed, students grew in confidence, learning to move beyond prepared questions, listen with genuine intent and respond with empathy. What started as an interview became an authentic conversation.
The photography component of the elective challenged students to think beyond technical skills. Every portrait became an exercise in thoughtful representation, with students carefully considering lighting, composition and expression to capture the unique personality of each resident. The result was a collection of portraits that were not only visually striking but deeply personal.
The project culminated in a special celebration at Arcare, where students proudly presented their completed biographies, framed photographic portraits and visual chronologies to the residents who had so generously shared their stories. It was a moving occasion filled with smiles, gratitude and genuine emotion as residents saw their lives reflected through the eyes of a young person who had taken the time to truly know them. For many students, seeing the emotional response to their work was one of the most rewarding moments of the semester.
At the CUBE Showcase, students reflected on the many skills they had developed throughout the subject. They spoke proudly about strengthening their communication through active listening and thoughtful questioning, refining their collaboration by working effectively with peers, giving and receiving constructive feedback, meeting deadlines and supporting one another throughout the creative process. Alongside these transferable skills, students developed their writing, photography and creative thinking capabilities while growing in confidence and independence.
Yet despite the many areas of personal and academic growth, students unanimously agreed that getting to know their resident was the most valuable part of the experience. Having a real person at the heart of their project gave their learning genuine purpose and meaning. They looked forward to each visit to Arcare, treasured the conversations they shared and spoke warmly about “their resident” long after the project had concluded. Likewise, many residents eagerly anticipated each visit, welcoming familiar faces and continuing conversations from previous weeks.
These relationships became the true measure of the elective’s success. What began as an educational project evolved into authentic intergenerational connections built on trust, respect and shared humanity. It was a powerful reminder that some of life’s most meaningful lessons are learned through listening, understanding and taking the time to value another person’s story.
Behind Those Eyes is a powerful expression of The Knox School’s commitment to educating the whole child through knowledge, skills and character. Students applied creative and technical knowledge in photography and writing, strengthened their communication, collaboration and critical thinking skills, and developed the character qualities of empathy, curiosity and respect. These are capabilities that extend far beyond the classroom and will continue to shape the young people they are becoming.
Although the project concluded at the end of Semester One, its impact will continue well beyond the final presentation. The biographies, portraits and visual chronologies will remain as lasting reminders of the stories that were shared, while the relationships and lessons formed throughout the semester will stay with our students for years to come. The experience reminded everyone involved that every person carries a story worth hearing, and that taking the time to truly listen can leave a lasting impact on both the storyteller and the listener.
