Today, our Year 8 students participated in an exciting and immersive African Drumming Workshop, exploring the rich cultural traditions and vibrant rhythms of West Africa.

Throughout the workshop, students learned to play the djembe, a traditional West African drum renowned for its powerful sound and important role in community celebrations, storytelling, and cultural expression. As they developed their drumming skills, students also gained insight into the history, significance, and cultural roots of West African music and performance.

The experience extended beyond music, with students enthusiastically taking part in Afro-contemporary dance, combining movement, rhythm, and creativity in a dynamic and engaging way. A highlight of the workshop was the live musical performance, which blended traditional African percussion instruments with the energetic influences of funk and jazz, creating an inspiring and interactive atmosphere.

The workshop was led by internationally recognised facilitators who are respected leaders in traditional, modern, and Afro-contemporary dance choreography and performance. Their passion, expertise, and contribution to the Australian dance scene provided students with an authentic and memorable cultural experience.

This unique workshop took students on a musical journey through rhythm, movement, and cultural storytelling, encouraging creativity, collaboration, confidence, and cultural appreciation. It was wonderful to see students fully engaged, embracing new experiences, and discovering the universal power of music and dance to connect people across cultures.

We thank the facilitators for sharing their knowledge and talents and providing our Year 8 students with such an enriching and enjoyable learning opportunity.
