The Falcon Squad Take on Nutrition

This week, the Falcon Squad, our group of aspirational Year 9 to 11 athletes excelling across a wide range of sports, participated in a two-hour Fuel for Performance session led by Food Studies teacher, Ms Emer Fox. The session was designed to help students understand how nutrition supports training, recovery, and overall performance.

The session began with a theory component, where students explored how macronutrients and micronutrients work together to fuel the body, aid recovery, and optimise results. They also learned how to read nutrition labels, compare products, and see through common marketing claims—equipping them with the skills to make informed, performance-focused food choices.

The group then moved into the kitchen for a hands-on activity, preparing high-protein energy balls. This simple, nutrient-dense snack was the perfect way to bring theory into practice, showing just how easy it can be to create balanced, energy-boosting food at home.

By the end of the session, students left with more than just a box of healthy snacks. They gained practical skills, confidence in their nutritional knowledge, and fresh ideas for fuelling their sporting achievements—an important step in their journey as student-athletes.
