Our second Year 6 leadership incursion, as part of a year-long inquiry into leadership, took place on Thursday 30 April, with a central focus on Leadership in Action. The day was designed to empower students to move beyond theory and consider tangible steps they can take to lead within the school and the wider community.
The morning kicked off in the Junior Quadrangle with a series of high-energy, collaborative activities. Working in teams of six, students navigated challenges that required more than just physical effort; they were tasked with demonstrating:
- Empathy & Courage: Supporting teammates through difficult tasks.
- Initiative & Curiosity: Finding creative solutions to complex problems.
- Communication & Drive: Working together under pressure to achieve a common goal.
We then welcomed Emily from Supreme Incursions for a Happy Healthy Minds session focusing on emotional intelligence and self-regulation. The activities provided a unique balance of high-energy movement and mindful reflection, including:
- Mindfulness: Creating Zen-like sand gardens and engaging in calming, soothing exercises.
- Physicality: Yoga, calisthenics, and rigorous physical challenges.
- Expression: A laughter station and music-based activities.
The goal was to encourage students to consider the perspectives of others while developing personal strategies for managing their own emotions.
To wrap up the day, students translated their inspiration into a practical plan. Each student constructed an Action Diagram; a circle divided into eight sections. Each segment represented a specific commitment for the term, categorised by:
- Physical Actions
- Academic Endeavours
- Social Goals
- Community Contributions
This exercise resulted in a diverse array of commitments, ranging from personal self-improvement to broader community-building initiatives.
The following are examples of the practical initiatives our Year 6 students have committed to:
My educational action is to write another novel and enter myself into a writing competition. – Nina, 6B
Make two new friends this term. – Shania, 6B
Complete my Grade 1 cello exam. – Haveen, 6B
Join a Badminton Club. – Ryan, 6A
Learn to cook a new recipe. – Arvin, 6A
Learn how to draw and then teach someone else. – Niki, 6A
The day served as a powerful reminder that real change only occurs when we have the courage to take the first step. We look forward to seeing these Leadership in Action goals come to life throughout the term.
