Melbourne Symphony Orchestra: A Celebration of Sibelius

On Friday the 31st of October, students from Volante Strings and the Senior Concert Band had the opportunity to attend the Celebration of Sibelius concert by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Benjamin Northey, at Robert Blackwood Hall, Monash University.

The program featured four of Jean Sibelius’s most admired works, including FinlandiaValse triste, and the Violin Concerto in D minor, performed by acclaimed Australian violinist Edward Walton. The orchestra’s expressive playing and rich tone brought each piece vividly to life, showcasing the emotional depth and beauty of Sibelius’s music.

For our students, it was an inspiring experience to see professional musicians perform at such a high level, deepening their appreciation for orchestral music and reminding them of the power of live performance.
