Celebrating Innovation at Knox

On 2 December, we celebrated the outstanding achievements of our Semester 2 Knoxpedition and CUBE teams at a vibrant whole school Showcase.

Year 8 Knoxpedition students proudly presented their energy-efficient cardboard homes, the culmination of a term-long interdisciplinary project. Working as architects, interior designers and scientists, students designed and constructed two identical houses with one featuring an innovation aimed at reducing heat loss. They planned and conducted scientific investigations using boiling water and thermometers to test the effectiveness of their chosen features. Each group also created explanatory posters in English to communicate their findings and design thinking.

Year 9 Impact Innovators impressed guests Emily and Sandra from Orana Neighbourhood House with projects that highlighted social connection, creativity and community care. Projects included:

  • A pizza oven project designed to bring community members together
  • An events team who planned a stall for Orana House at the Twilight Festival
  • A charity group producing crochet kits to make blankets for those in need
  • An open project team who designed and delivered three park benches with custom cushions
  • A gardening group preparing plants for inclusion in a community Zen garden

In the Impact Innovators elective, students become agents of change, researching real-world issues, collaborating with community partners, and using skills from Humanities, Technology, Art & Design, and English to develop meaningful solutions.

Our Year 9 Ranching Out team showcased their work with The Ranch, responding to a real client brief. Students used design thinking and group expertise to understand needs, ideate, prototype and refine practical solutions and ultimately producing sustainable resources tailored to their client.

Finally, our Year 9/10 Personal Learning Project (PLP) students presented a diverse range of self-directed designs and creations. Throughout the semester, they explored topics of personal interest while building capabilities in agency, quality thinking and ethical practice. Their final products demonstrated impressive initiative, research skills and creativity.

The Showcase was a wonderful celebration of student voice, innovation and deep learning across Years 8,9 and 10. Congratulations to all students!
