Full Throttle at the STEM Racing State Finals
This week, two of our STEM Racing teams, Revolution and Axions, represented The Knox School at the STEM Racing State Finals at Wyndham Tech School in Werribee.
After months of designing, testing and refining their miniature F1 cars, students finally saw their ideas come to life on the track. Using a mix of CAD design, 3D printing and lightweight materials, both teams combined creativity, precision and engineering know-how to produce aerodynamic cars built for speed.
The competition was about far more than racing. Each team managed sponsorships, developed enterprise portfolios and presented their designs, learning how innovation, communication and teamwork intersect in the real world.
Team Revolution, competing in the Professional Class, impressed with their sleek design and advanced engineering. Building on their experience from last year, they refined their concepts and introduced new ideas to boost performance. Congratulations to Ethan, Rithik, Lincoln, Indy and Nevon for their dedication and professionalism throughout the competition.
Team Axions, an all-girls Year 8 team competing in the Development Class, brought creativity and energy to every stage of the event. Their teamwork and problem-solving skills resulted in a standout car and an exceptional portfolio that showcased both scientific and entrepreneurial thinking. Well done to Saraya, Lisa, Madeleine, Claire and Gina for representing the growing strength of women in STEM at The Knox School.
While the students didn’t make it onto the podium at the event, their car designs were among the best, as demonstrated in the Knockout Racing event. Both teams reached the semi-finals in their respective divisions. Revolution advanced with impressive wins, defeating their opponents by a total of 0.25 seconds, but were narrowly edged out in the semi-finals by just 0.04 seconds by the eventual champions, Nexus.
Axions reached the semi-finals after a thrilling quarter-final victory, winning by 0.12 seconds across two races. Although they were ultimately eliminated by Valiant, the girls proved they are a team to watch in the future, with their first-ever car design showing remarkable competitiveness.
Across the three days, both teams demonstrated what true learning looks like: Curiosity, collaboration, and the courage to test, adapt and improve. Their enthusiasm for STEM and innovation reflected the spirit of The Knox School: learning that goes beyond the classroom and into the world.
Congratulations to Revolution and Axions on their outstanding achievements and for leading the way in innovation and design.
