We are proud to celebrate two outstanding members of our recently graduated Class of 2025, Amelia Roodt and April Yu, who were accepted into the prestigious WiSE (Women in STEM Empowerment) Program hosted by Jane Street in Hong Kong in early February 2026.
This highly competitive, all-expenses-paid opportunity saw Amelia and April travel to Hong Kong to gain first-hand insight into how advanced mathematics and computer science are applied in a real-world finance setting. Their selection is a testament to their exceptional achievement and dedication to mathematics throughout their secondary studies.
Jane Street’s WiSE Program is designed for high-achieving students about to commence university studies in STEM fields. The two-day immersive program invited students from around the world to explore the dynamic intersection of mathematics, probability, computer science, and trading.
Hosted at Jane Street’s Hong Kong office in Chater House, the program offered participants an in-depth look at the firm’s role as a market maker and liquidity provider. Students attended seminars and workshops led by traders and technologists, gaining insight into the mechanics of trading that go far beyond the familiar concept of “buy low, sell high.” Attendees also learned about the diverse career pathways available within quantitative trading and technology, hearing directly from professionals who transitioned from studying STEM subjects to working in the industry.
In addition to the academic and professional learning, participants enjoyed a social event that fostered connection and collaboration among like-minded peers from across the globe. Jane Street provided travel to and from Hong Kong, accommodation, and financial assistance for meals and incidental expenses, ensuring students could fully immerse themselves in the experience.
Following the Celebration of Achievement Assembly on Tuesday 10 February, Amelia shared:
“Last week, April and I (two 2025 Specialist Maths students) were flown out all expenses paid to Hong Kong by the quantitative trading firm Jane Street. Along with 64 women about to commence STEM degrees, we attended seminars and workshops for the WiSE program.
We learnt what Jane Street does as a market maker and liquidity provider, and explored trading mechanics beyond buy low, sell high. I loved the applications of Specialist and Methods maths in Figgies, a card game used to train interns that models mutually beneficial trading.
Beyond the program, travelling to Hong Kong was absolutely fantastic – the program provided fast, like-minded friends, and the entire city was within reach. As a commencing Computer Science student, it was incredibly exciting to see the maths and logic that I was so interested in applied in a real-world setting, and to know there is strong demand for graduates in the field.
The next event is a reunion in Hong Kong in 2027, after which I hope to secure an internship in the quantitative trading field.”
Amelia and April’s achievement highlights the strength of our Mathematics program and the opportunities available to students who pursue Specialist Mathematics and Mathematical Methods with curiosity and determination. Their experience demonstrates the real-world impact of advanced mathematical thinking and problem-solving, and the exciting pathways that can open for students passionate about STEM.
We congratulate April and Amelia on this remarkable accomplishment and look forward to following their continued success in the years ahead.
