The Knox School Stage Band, Senior Choir, and Jazz Combo ensembles recently travelled to Mount Gambier, South Australia, to take part in the iconic Generations in Jazz Festival.
Held annually in Mount Gambier, Generations in Jazz is one of Australia’s most significant youth music events, bringing together thousands of talented student musicians from across Australia and New Zealand. More than just a festival, it is a vibrant celebration of creativity, collaboration, and musical excellence, where young performers share the stage with some of the world’s leading jazz artists.
Our Students proudly represented The Knox School in the Stage Band, Jazz Combo, and Vocal Ensemble divisions, performing a carefully prepared program of jazz repertoire as part of the renowned school awards competitions. These performances were a key highlight of the festival and provided an invaluable opportunity to showcase their hard work, growth, and musicianship on a national stage.
Beyond the performances, Generations in Jazz offered a deeply enriching and transformative experience. Students attended world-class concerts, participated in workshops and mentoring sessions, and engaged with adjudicators and professional musicians from across Australia and beyond. These experiences provided valuable insight not only into musical technique but also into leadership, resilience, and the dedication required to succeed in the performing arts.
One of the festival’s most powerful aspects was its ability to move learning beyond the classroom. Students performed to large, engaged audiences in a high-energy and supportive environment that challenged them to rise to the occasion and deepened their appreciation for live music. At the same time, they were immersed in a community of like-minded young musicians, forming connections, sharing experiences, and celebrating each other’s achievements.
Beyond the stage, students had the opportunity to discover new artists, support fellow performers, and experience the unique atmosphere that makes Generations in Jazz such a memorable national event. It proved to be an unforgettable weekend that fostered personal growth, musical development, and lasting memories.
The Generations in Jazz reflections from our Students below say it all:
“The Generations in Jazz experience was incredible. My only regret is that, now that I’m in Year 12, I won’t be able to participate next year.
The festival provides a valuable opportunity for young, aspiring musicians to immerse themselves in jazz and explore its many styles. Watching higher-division bands perform is especially inspiring, as it shows us what is possible and encourages us to aim higher in our own musical journeys.
A highlight of the event was seeing Tower of Power perform. Despite rising to fame over 50 years ago, they still delivered an energetic performance that had thousands of students on their feet. It was the kind of experience that stays with you for life.
Socially, the festival was an amazing bonding experience with my fellow TKS Students. From sleeping on the floor together to early mornings, late nights, and the long bus ride to Mount Gambier, we had countless opportunities to connect. Even small things, like sharing our mascot, a plush frog named “Pibble”, helped bring us closer together. Beyond our own School, there was also a strong sense of community across all participants. Everyone shared a deep passion for music, which created an immediate connection between students from different schools.
TKS had several groups participate, including the Senior Choir, Stage Band, and Jazz Combo. The Stage Band performed impressively, particularly given the age of its members, delivering a performance they are sure to remember. The Senior Choir was equally outstanding, demonstrating the power and versatility of the human voice.
Personally, performing with the Jazz Combo was a rewarding experience. Although the group consisted of students from different year levels who might not usually interact, music brought us together. Even when mistakes happened, the overall experience was enjoyable and meaningful. All TKS performances were strong, and every musician involved should be proud.
Overall, Generations in Jazz is, in my opinion, a defining experience for any music student. It offers not only musical growth, but also lasting memories and connections that extend far beyond the stage.” – Oak, Year 12
“I had an amazing time at Generations in Jazz with the Senior Choir, Jazz Combo and Stage Band. Everyone had a blast, especially on the second night when Tower of Power performed, creating memories many of us will never forget. Although nerves were high for everyone, we all had one goal: to have as much fun as possible. The long bus ride to Mount Gambier was filled with singing, laughter and chatting, which helped create lasting friendships. As a Year 12 student, having younger choir members ask what division we would be performing in next year was a bittersweet moment that made the laughter and connections even more special. The rain, late nights and long bus rides helped to create memories and friendships I will never forget. Thank you Generations in Jazz and The Knox School 2026 Ensembles for making this the best send-off possible.” – Emma, Year 12
“Attending Generations in Jazz in Mount Gambier was such a meaningful and inspiring experience for me. Watching professional musicians perform live was incredible and really broadened my understanding of jazz, showing me just how expressive and diverse the genre can be. Performing myself was both exciting and challenging, but it pushed me to grow in confidence and connect more deeply with the music. One of my favourite parts was meeting and talking to students from different schools and even different states. Even though we didn’t know each other, we were able to instantly connect through our shared love of music. It made the whole festival feel really special and reminded me why I love being part of the jazz community.” – Belle, Year 11
“Generations in Jazz was truly an unforgettable experience. As we stepped on stage, the adrenaline hit as the lights dimmed. The focus was entirely on us. In that moment, everything else faded as the rhythm became syncopated, filling everyone with an energetic, jumpy vibe. It was fantastic to see how unified our choir was as we sang on stage, a testament not only to our hard work but also to our genuine enjoyment of being present in the moment.
Spending the weekend away with friends and creating new memories was also a major highlight, especially when we put together a big Generations in Jazz rap summary around the table while enjoying what felt like the biggest feast known to mankind.
While I’m sad it’s over, the experience has given me a newfound confidence to continue my musical journey. I’m now more excited than ever for next year to roll around and to embark on another six-hour, Maccas-filled bus ride! ” – Arien, Year 11
“At Generations in Jazz, I had an unforgettable experience that went far beyond just performing. Being surrounded by so many talented musicians created an atmosphere that was exciting, inspiring, and full of energy. I loved being able to soak in the music around me not just playing on stage, but also listening to other ensembles and noticing how their style, interpretation, and overall vibe differed from ours. It opened my eyes to how creative and diverse jazz performance can be.
The trip itself was just as fun as the event. The bus rides were full of laughter, singing, and pure chaos in the best way possible. Sharing those moments with friends made the whole experience even more special. And of course, trying all the delicious food along the way was a highlight on its own. We also had lovely fashion sense with our yellow beanie’s. Everything about the trip was an unforgettable experience.” – Hope, Year 8
“Generations in Jazz was an amazing and very inspiring experience. I enjoyed being around thousands of kids with the same goals and aspirations.” – Mason, Year 8
“Generations in Jazz was a unique and unforgettable experience that brought music and people together in the best way. The days were full-on and sometimes exhausting, but they were also fun, exciting, and completely worth it. What made Generations in Jazz especially meaningful was how it brought us closer together, even if we had never met each other before. By the end of the weekend, we had made new friendships and shared memories that made the whole experience truly special.” – Quinn, Year 8
“Generations in Jazz was an amazing experience that included singing, playing instruments, watching concerts, and even a few people losing their voices along the way. It was busy and challenging, but also very exciting and fun. Being surrounded by so much music helped everyone learn new things and improve their skills. Generations in Jazz is a great opportunity to grow musically, and from watching everyone who went, it felt like we all became more confident and experienced. Overall, it was a memorable event that helped us move forward on our own musical journeys.” – Ishaan, Year 7
Congratulations to our Stage Band, Senior Choir, and Jazz Combo students on their outstanding participation and for representing The Knox School so proudly at Generations in Jazz 2026.
