Last week, our Year 9 students participated in the Arnhem Land Cultural Immersion experience, a highly enriching opportunity for students to connect on Country and engage in authentic learning alongside the Yolŋu people of Northeast Arnhem Land. The experience provided students with a unique insight into their culture, traditions and ways of life.
Throughout the immersion, students participated in a range of cultural activities and shared experiences that fostered meaningful connections with the community. Through learning about Yolŋu language, history, kinship systems, values and cultural practices, students gained a greater appreciation for the interconnectedness between Country, family, identity and community. The opportunity to learn directly from the Yolŋu people offered invaluable perspectives that extended far beyond the classroom.
The camp also challenged students to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new experiences and reflect on their own values and understanding of culture and belonging. Living and learning together in a remote environment encouraged resilience, independence, collaboration, respect, care and empathy while strengthening relationships amongst peers and staff.
Under the blazing sunset bathed in rich hues of gold, crimson, and burnt orange, we set foot onto Arnhem Land, as Mother Nature welcomed us with the heavy and humid heat. The women’s healing and weaving session made me feel deeply connected and at peace. As we listened to the sounds of nature during the ceremony, we learned that our grandmothers are our backbone, always supporting and guiding us spiritually through life. This touched all the teachers and girls emotionally, as we reflected on the memories and love we share with the important women in our lives.
Another unforgettable moment was the astronomy session. Without city lights dimming the stars, the night sky was illuminated in breathtaking detail as stories were shared and cultural dances were performed around us.
Although I was initially nervous and hesitant about going to Arnhem Land, the warmth of the people and the connection formed with the land made all the worries and homesickness disappear.
– Aarna, Year 9
Our journey to Arnhem Land was far more than just a school camp; it was an experience that changed the way many of us viewed each other, ourselves, and the world around us. Being away from our normal routines and comforts allowed us to truly connect, not through phones or distractions, but through shared experiences, conversations, and moments that felt genuine and unforgettable. Over the course of the trip, barriers between people slowly disappeared. Friend groups blended together, new friendships formed naturally, and even the quietest people began to open up. By the end of the camp, we no longer felt like separate individuals travelling together, but more like a community that had learnt to support, understand, and appreciate one another.
One of the most powerful moments of the trip was astronomy night. We all sat together in silence beneath an endless sky filled with thousands of stars stretching further than we could imagine. Away from the bright city lights, the stars seemed alive, glowing so clearly that it almost felt unreal. In that moment, everything felt calm. The stress and noise of everyday life disappeared, replaced by stillness and reflection. Sitting there together under the vast sky created a feeling that is difficult to describe. A mixture of peace, wonder, and connection. It reminded us how small we are in comparison to the universe, yet how meaningful shared moments can be. Looking around and seeing everyone quietly taking in the same breathtaking view made the experience feel deeply unifying. It was one of those rare moments where nobody needed to speak because the silence itself brought everyone together.
Another part of the camp that left a lasting impact on all of us was the time we spent with the Yolngu people and children. The connections we formed went beyond simply learning about culture in a classroom setting; we were able to experience it through stories, conversations, laughter, and shared activities. The Yolngu community welcomed us with warmth and kindness, making us feel included and respected from the very beginning. Spending time with the children was especially memorable, as their joy and energy brought everyone together instantly. Despite our different backgrounds and ways of life, there was a sense of understanding that did not require words. Through these interactions, we learnt the importance of connection to land, culture, family, and community.
The camp taught us lessons that could never fully be learnt inside a classroom. It showed us the value of slowing down, appreciating the people around us, and being open to perspectives different from our own. More than anything, Arnhem Land became a place where friendships deepened, memories were created, and meaningful connections were formed; not only with each other, but also with the Yolngu people, the land, and the quiet beauty of the world around us.
– Elisha, Year 9
The Arnhem Land experience is by far the most memorable moment this year. Travelling to another state alone is already a huge accomplishment, but spending time with new people and building stronger relationships with them? A highlight in my life that will stay with me forever. Every moment that I experienced impacted me both mentally and emotionally. Being able to listen to the Yolngu peoples’ story was such a gift to me and my peers. The most emotional thing about this whole camp was sitting around the campfire with my mentors and my house group. From telling stories, to sharing our experiences, that moment helped to gather us closer and connect with one another. We laughed, we cried, we even procrastinated about our decisions. But the most important part about it is that we all got around each other to face these emotions together as a group. Every connection made from the staff of culture college or even my teachers, the emotional connection carried me through the ups and downs of the camp.
When we did our performance as a house and as a year level, I felt a sense of pride in finding my momentum with everyone who was involved. That moment; that experience pushed me out of my comfort zone, which was one of my most influential moments of my life.
Those connections grew from various things I took from the experience of the entire camp. Learning to make a spear was one of the skills I took with me back home. This is an incredible skill that highlighted my creativity and perseverance to learn and grow. Throughout this whole experience, our grade was able to connect and support each other through their own problems and comfort them through the struggles of their life. It was incredible that everyone got involved in our teacher’s vs students footy match, which was the ultimate highlight of the strong connections between the community of the staff, culture college and students.
Through many memories gathered across this whole experience, the most important was being able to connect and enjoy the moment with culture college, the Yolngu people and my school mates. Every moment with them felt like I was with my family; loved, cared and understood by everyone. If I had the opportunity to do it all again, I would go every time.

The 2026 T-shirt design:
This year’s Arnhem Land Camp shirt design was inspired by culture, connection and the experience of learning together as a community. The front design includes the phrase “Together We Learn,” inspired by the message and values shared through Culture College, highlighting the importance of sharing knowledge, listening to others and learning through culture and experience. The kangaroo artwork represents Arnhem Land and symbolises connection to Country, movement and journey.
The back design uses bold typography to create a modern and eye-catching t-shirt. By combining ideas from our two original designs, the final design brings together a modern style while still keeping it meaningful.

As Year 11 students, we wanted to create a design that represents school spirit, cultural connection and the shared experiences that make Arnhem Land Camp such a memorable opportunity for students. We enjoyed working on this piece and creating something meaningful that students and staff can wear proudly during the camp. We hope the design reflects the positive environment, learning opportunities and strong sense of community that Arnhem Land Camp is all about, and we hope everyone enjoyed their time at camp and the experiences shared along the way.
