Under the Mask: A Drama Showcase

Last Thursday evening, the School auditorium came alive with colour, creativity and laughter as our Year 7 and 8 students took to the stage for their Drama Showcase, Under the Mask.

The evening brought together short ensemble pieces, monologues and visual displays, celebrating a year of imagination and collaboration. The program featured mask, mime, movement and mayhem, with student work presented through artwork, posters, journals, photographs, videos and live performances.

Highlights of the night included a Commedia Dell’ Arte performance by Sunny Kolwalkar, Ethan Ng, Oscar Shan and Isaac Hobbs, set in a lively café scene, and powerful monologues by Fenice Ong, Aarna Bavadiya and Ruby Feng. Adding to the fun, a photobooth invited guests to dress up, strike a pose and capture a few wonderfully silly moments together.

But Under the Mask was about more than entertainment. The evening reflected the deeper value of Drama at The Knox School; developing confidence, empathy and communication skills that reach far beyond the stage.

“Drama Night was extremely fun, and it really lit up the last couple weeks of my term. There have been lots of assessments the past couple of weeks, so participating as one of the main acts in Drama Night was very special. I absolutely loved working with my group, and they all did an amazing job. Getting to know them better while practicing every day at lunch and after school, before the performance, was such a cool experience. I hope to do similar things to this in the future.”

“The TKS drama was a one-of-a-kind experience for me, having not done these types of things before. I am grateful for joining The Knox School and experiencing Drama in real performances like this. The night overall was enjoyable for all, and I was glad to have the great audience that gave us lots of laughs to fuel us, and to use improvisation in the way we did, creating an even better performance as the show went on. Another great aspect was the photobooth, me and those I performed with, along with one of our other friends snapping a quick pic there.”

Although I’d never been particularly confident performing, I really enjoyed the Drama Night event. It was a truly unique experience, an opportunity for us to showcase our work and have an engaging show with the audience.”
— Fenice Ong

The evening was a true celebration of creativity, courage and community, and a reminder of how Performing Arts inspire students to express themselves and connect with others.
