Something strange is growing at The Knox School.
It started as a seed of an idea more than 18 months ago. Since then, it has been nurtured through rehearsals, workshops, creativity, collaboration and countless hours of hard work. Now, our Senior School production of Little Shop of Horrors is ready to burst into bloom, and trust us, this is one plant you’ll want to see.
Directed by acclaimed musical theatre star Anna O’Byrne, this year’s production is bold, hilarious, ambitious and proudly student-led. Featuring an outstanding cast, a live orchestra, dynamic choreography and one very hungry plant, Little Shop of Horrors promises to be one of the most entertaining productions ever to take to The Knox School stage.
But what makes this production particularly special is the extent to which students have helped shape it.
Holly (Year 12) and Caio (Year 11) have stepped into leadership roles as student choreographers, working alongside staff to create movement and staging across principal scenes and large ensemble numbers. Their creative contributions have become an integral part of the show’s energy and visual storytelling.
Holly and Caio shared:
“It has been an incredible experience to collaborate in the creative process and share our passions with the school community. Through working individually, together, and with the director, we are building skills and experience of value beyond the production and the gates of TKS. Contributing to the overview of, and even sometimes leading, rehearsals and choreography has also been so much fun. We cannot wait for you all to see the product of the hard work everyone is putting into this amazing production.”
The cast’s enthusiasm is equally infectious.
Stephanie (Year 11), who plays the iconic role of Audrey, shared:
“I’ve had so much fun being a part of the production this year, and I’ve loved witnessing the progress of the show from the end of last year to now. A highlight for me has been working with such a dedicated team of students and teachers to bring this show to life.”
For Belle (Year 11), who plays Crystal, the experience has also been about community and mentorship:
“I’ve absolutely loved being part of this year’s production of Little Shop of Horrors so far. As the oldest Urchin, it’s been really special getting to mentor and support the younger Urchins, helping them grow in confidence while also learning from them myself.”
Under Anna O’Byrne’s guidance, students have embraced a professional-level creative process while developing confidence, leadership and performance skills. O’Byrne brings a wealth of experience to the production, having starred in leading roles across Australian and international stages, including her award-winning portrayal of Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and her acclaimed performances in The Phantom of the Opera and Love Never Dies.
For audiences, meanwhile, there’s plenty to enjoy.
Set on the downtrodden streets of Skid Row, Little Shop of Horrors follows the story of Seymour, a shy florist who discovers a mysterious plant with an insatiable appetite. Featuring beloved musical theatre hits including “Suddenly Seymour”, “Feed Me (Git It)” and “Dentist!”, the show combines rock ‘n’ roll, doo-wop, comedy, romance and jaw-dropping puppetry into an unforgettable theatrical experience.
The only question that remains is: will Audrey II get what it wants?
