Create It Design and Technology Incursion

On 11 August, our Year 1 students had an unforgettable when they took part in a dynamic and engaging half-day incursion.  The day was filled with activities designed to help the students develop essential skills like collaboration, critical thinking, and effective communication.

The session kicked off with some fun icebreakers and team-building games, which helped the students get to know one another and build a strong sense of camaraderie. This set the stage for deeper group discussions about rules, decision-making, and how to work together efficiently.

Next, the real fun began with the hands-on challenges! Students were split into teams and given the opportunity to unleash their creativity while solving problems together.

Here’s a quick overview of the activities:

The Mystery Bag Challenge: Each team was tasked with designing and constructing a prototype using a selection of everyday materials. The results were truly impressive, with students showcasing their resourcefulness and creativity.

Rank It!: In this task, students worked together to prioritise and categorise a list of items. They discussed the pros and cons of each option, making decisions as a group and learning to respect each other’s opinions

The Ultimate Design Challenge!: Perhaps the highlight of the day. Students worked within a set budget to plan and create a product that met specific criteria. It was wonderful to see them approach the challenge with such enthusiasm, balancing creativity with practicality.

After the challenges, the teams presented their prototypes to the group, receiving thoughtful feedback from their peers and reflecting on the entire experience. It was inspiring to see their confidence grow as they shared their ideas and learned from one another.

This incursion was not just about fun, it was also a valuable opportunity for our students to practice important life skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and creative thinking. We’re proud of the way they collaborated, communicated, and applied their creativity throughout the day.
