What happens when you mix curious Year 3 students, liquid nitrogen, and a day of hands-on discovery? A trip to Scienceworks, of course.
As part of their Term 3 Science unit on States of Matter, our Year 3 students spent the day at Scienceworks exploring the fascinating world of solids, liquids and gases. The highlight of the excursion was the “Liquid Nitrogen: Solids, Liquids and Gases” showcase, where students witnessed dramatic demonstrations that brought classroom learning to life.
From watching materials change state before their eyes to discovering how heat energy affects different substances, students were able to see scientific concepts in action. There were plenty of wide eyes, excited questions and unexpected “wow” moments throughout the day.
Beyond the workshop, students explored the interactive exhibits across Scienceworks, investigating everything from movement and energy to technology and design. The hands-on experiences encouraged students to experiment, problem-solve and think like scientists.
The excursion provided a memorable conclusion to the Year 3 States of Matter unit, helping students connect their classroom learning with real-world scientific phenomena. Most importantly, it reminded us that some of the best learning happens when students are free to explore, question and discover.
Sometimes science is best understood through a textbook. Other times, it involves liquid nitrogen and a lot of surprised faces. Fortunately, our Year 3 students got to experience both.
