Wakakirri Debut Dazzles: Year 4 Students Bring Storytelling to Life

On Wednesday 23 July, our talented Year 4 students took the stage for their very first Wakakirri performance, and it was a great debut for the students.

Wakakirri is a national Story-Dance Festival that invites students from across Australia to share their ideas and dreams through dance, movement and storytelling. Each performance is a vibrant mix of drama, choreography, music and creativity, and The Knox School’s entry delivered all that and more.

Our story followed two students who find themselves trapped inside a video game, and can only return to the real world by learning to work together. With slick level-up transitions, nostalgic costumes from the 1960s and energetic choreography, the performance struck a perfect balance of fun and heart. Adjudicator Lauren Jimmieson called it “an out-of-the-box concept” and praised the “great onstage chemistry” of our lead performers.

The feedback spoke for itself:

“Students moved with confidence! Clearly very well rehearsed! Congratulations to these students on their first Wakakirri experience. Memorable for all!”

The accolades flowed, with TKS receiving five awards:

  • Storytelling Award for Story Theme and Concept
  • Ensemble Award for Dance Performance
  • Lead Cast Award for Performing in Dancing and Acting
  • Production Award for Overall Staging
  • Creative Production Award for Overall Costume Design

We also received the Best Public Speaking Award, with three student representatives impressing the panel – an outstanding accomplishment!

From noon to 9.00pm, our students remained focused, enthusiastic and respectful, earning praise from Wakakirri staff for their exemplary behaviour throughout the day. Well done to all involved!

The performance was more than just a dance. It was a celebration of teamwork, creativity and resilience, proof that when students at TKS step onto the stage, they’re ready to shine
